Art of Hollow Knight: Silksong
Art of Hollow Knight: Silksong

After having played Hollow Knight: Silksong for quite a while, I can confidently say it lives up to the hype. (If you do remember my previous post, those were my thoughts about the pre-release phase, not a review just to clear this up.) To start off this post, I would like to say: WARNING. SPOILERS AHEAD. DO NOT READ THE NEXT TWO PARAGRAPHS IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED. THERE WILL BE A SAFE POINT MARKER IF YOU STILL INTEND TO READ, MARKING WHERE IT IS SAFE TO START READING.

Now that that's out of the way, I'll talk about the story for now. I think having Hornet transported to a fallen kingdom was a stroke of genius, because that allows even those who haven't played/beaten Hollow Knight to play without having their experience spoiled by the story of Silksong.

If you have played and do not understand the early story, this should clear it up. Hornet has been kidnapped, and transported to a far away land, filled with pilgrims trying to reach a sort of citadel/city at the top of the kingdom, although none have returned from the citadel, meaning one of two things: Either the city-del kills outsiders, or it's such a heavenly place that no one ever wants to leave. Hornet is repeatedly mistaken for a pilgrim, as she is on the same journey as them but for a different reason, that reason being she is trying to find answers as to why she is here, where this is, and how she can get home. That is as much as I know about the story, so onto the gameplay.

SAFEPOINT

Now, for those who didn't read the previous paragraph, this paragraph will be about gameplay.

For the movement and acrobatics, I would say a 9/10 as they could've made it more precise, but otherwise it has the best movement I've ever seen in a game: the drilling, the harpoon move, the healing animation, the invincibility frames and the downwards attack are all perfect. If you're the kind of person who enjoys fast paced combat systems, you should definitely buy this, and even if you're not, you should still buy it.

Now onto difficulty. It is definitely harder than Hollow Knight, with shorter invincibility frames, some enemies dealing more damage, and the pace, but at the same time it feels perfectly balanced. It's quite an indescribable feeling, in a good way, that plays right into the environment, and that sentence plays right into this post!

The way the environment is designed in this game is superb, with abandoned objects in the background, even abandoned levels, and unnecessary bosses. I know I could've saved myself a lot of trouble if I had fought the urge to pop that green bubble. It felt like when I realised I could skip The False Knight in the original game, after taking 7 tries to beat it and finally succeeding on one heart. The ambience, perfect. The traps, everything, perfect. the annoying falls all the way back down to where you started, perfect. Everything is awesome!

That is the end of this post, and this should be the last post I write unrelated to No Man's Sky for a long time, so goodbye, I hope this was benificial and *poofs out of existence
